Watch Feteer Be Made and Eat It at this Egyptian Restaurant

Mum Feteer @mum.feteer is a halal Egyptian restaurant serving classic Egyptian cuisine in Astoria, Queens. Feteer, a flaky Egyptian layered pastry, which can be either savory or sweet, is the highlight of this restaurant.

We originally wanted to order macaroni bechamel but sadly they didn’t have it when we were there - so def going to order it next time! We got the hawawshi, a thick pita stuffed with minced meat, onions, and spices. It was extremely juicy and flavorful. Note: it doesn’t come stacked. We did that ourselves just to show you how juicy and filled up it was. It regularly comes in a flat circle cut into four pieces. Next we tried the fattah which was heavily pushed by our server. At first we were hesitant because it wasn’t on the menu, but we eventually budged and wanted to see what it was about. To our surprise, we found that the rice pilaf with pieces of pita in it was very tasty and so was the lamb. We found that our lamb had an off putting smell but when we ate it, the taste was way better than what we had smelled which was pretty good. Of course, we had to order the feteer. We ordered the mixed feteer that came with pastrami, beef, chicken, and sausage. Yes, super meaty. It also had olives, green peppers, onions and tomatoes in it - which for some reason threw off the flavor a bit. The dough was crispy but it was really watery, most likely due to the watery veggies. Mint lemonade was also suggested by our server and y’all know we had to get those! It was made fresh and was soooooooo good — perfect sweet to tart ratio.

For some reason that we don’t have the answer to, prices looked super hiked up. All main entrees range from $20-$25.

Atmosphere: 8/10
They have a nice covered backyard patio which makes you feel like you’re indoors. They do have shisha - but didn’t see anyone smoking when we were there. They also have a small indoor seating area as well, probably for people who want to sit separate from the smoke.

Service: 8/10
Our food came at an appropriate time and the server was very helpful in helping us decide what to order.
