Where to Find Authentic, Halal Moroccan Food

If you were never able to find a solid, halal Moroccan spot, here’s a place to go to. Dar Yemma (@daryemma_official) just recently opened up on Steinway St in Astoria. It’s a casual eatery that serves up great food. We also went with a Moroccan friend of ours to really get a sense of what the food should taste like!

Lamb with prunes tagine

Food: 8/10
To start off, everyone receives complimentary bread and a small platter of lentils, spicy tomatoes, and pickled veggies. We then ordered Chicken Bastilla, a chicken pie wrapped in flaky pastry dough topped with syrup and almonds. We’ve never tried anything like it. It was actually very good and blew our minds at the work of such a combination (sugar and meat). We also tried the Harira soup (not pictured; forgot) that was okay - wasn’t our favorite, it was really tomato-y. Next we tried the merguez sandwich that was slathered with harissa sauce — also super good. We were torn on what type of tagine to order but ended up ordering the Lamb tagine with prunes and did not regret it. The recommended way to eat it is with the bread and try to get the lamb, prunes, and almonds in every bite. Don’t forget to soak up the gravy with the bread too. This was insanely delicious. The almonds gave it such great dimension of crunch. To end off we had to get Moroccan mint tea. Best eaten with dates or a sweet pastry like Chebakia, which is a sweetened almond cookie(?) that comes complimentary with the meal.

Price: 8/10
Prices are relatively reasonable and quite modest. The tagine was $19. That’s a whole lamb shank. For $19.

Atmosphere: 8/10
It’s a humble eatery. Lots of space. Well-lit, and clean.

Service: 8/10
Service is standard. The server comes up to your table to take your order and the food comes quick.
