It’s been a rough eight months for lots of businesses across the country. Restaurants that have had slow-business pre-COVID have are either shut down or are currently hanging by a thread, anxiously waiting for their next customer. Halal restaurants are no exception to what is going on in the dining industry.

Many halal restaurants have had to completely call halts and sell their businesses to make ends meet due to the lack of government relief for small businesses. Not all small businesses that applied for the Small Business COVID relief option were granted one. The scarcity of great halal options has now reduced to a game of scavenger hunt for many Muslims in the city.

Sokongdong Grill Lighthouse Restaurant (SKD) in Fairview, New Jersey is just one of the recent halal restaurants that have shut down. Owner of SKD, Dong Kim, has reported that the restaurant has officially gone out of business. This is not to confuse the other Sokongdong in Fort Lee. He has also reported that there are new owners and they will not continue to serve zabihah halal meat.

Despite the sad news, Dong hopes to open new halal dining ventures in the coming future.
